Carey’s Cottage, Hunters Hill

HomeResidentialCarey’s Cottage, Hunters Hill

Two separate timber framed cottages on the one site, both listed on the State Heritage Register and by the National Trust of Australia, were a constraint as well as an opportunity to design a sympathetic home for a young family.

The retention of the paired single storey cottages led to the design of the two-storey simple gabled pavilions, separated by the entry. This retained a built form and scale as an echo the historic cottages whilst providing the generous living areas required by the family. The third cottage on the site had been destroyed by fire, but the retained chimney structure provides a focal point for the garden.
